Glass Fused Steel LINER Tank

Glass-Fused-to-Steel (GFS) tanks, also known as Glass Lined Steel (GLS) tanks, represent a premium technology in the tank market. The fusion of glass and high-tensile mild steel combines the best properties of both materials. Steel provides strength and flexibility, while glass offers corrosion resistance. This fusion eliminates the need for painting in the future, as the tank is inherently protected against corrosion by the glass enamel coat. One of the significant advantages of GFS tanks is the widening of the acceptable bracket of pH values after the fusion of steel with glass. This means that the tanks can withstand a wider range of pH levels without compromising their integrity.

Moreover, the application of Glass-Fused-to-Steel technology to both interior and exterior surfaces ensures that the tanks can withstand harsh environments for many years without encountering significant issues. This durability makes GFS tanks an excellent choice for various industrial, municipal, and agricultural applications where reliability and longevity are crucial factors.

1. GFS Tanks with Liner:

These tanks come with a specialized internal liner that provides an additional layer of protection, ensuring enhanced durability and corrosion resistance.

Liner: The liner is a protective barrier that shields the tank’s interior from chemical reactions, corrosion, and external contaminants, significantly extending the tank’s service life.

The Design Standards followed for Glass-Fused-to-Steel (GFS) tanks –

1. AWWA D103: This standard is published by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and provides guidelines for the design, construction, and inspection of bolted steel tanks for water storage.

2. FM 4020: This standard is established by FM Global, a global insurance company specializing in property insurance and risk management solutions. FM 4020 specifically addresses the design and construction of fire protection water storage tanks. FM 4020 sets forth requirements related to tank materials, design criteria, seismic considerations, corrosion protection, and performance testing to ensure the effectiveness and reliability of firewater storage tanks.

Adhering to these standards ensures that GFS tanks meet the necessary safety, quality, and performance criteria required for water storage and fire protection applications. Compliance with AWWA D103-09 and FM 4020 standards also helps ensure consistency and interoperability in the design and construction of GFS tanks across different projects and locations.

PROCESS & TECHNOLOGY

A brief process of creating Glass-Fused-to-Steel (GFS) tanks involves several precise steps to ensure the quality and integrity of the finished product:

tank

Nut & Bolt holes & manhole drilling/punching

Pre-Heating

Shot blasting process

Fusion-Process

Enamelling Process

Post-Baking

Quality Check

Here’s an overview of the typical quality check process –

  • Spark Test
  • DFT
  • Impact test
  • Visual test (for liner)
  • Light test (for liner)
Installation-process

Installation process:

A. Top-to-Bottom Assembly

  • Start by assembling the top ring and roof.
  • Use jacks to lift the structure.
  • Add subsequent rings from the top down by bolting them beneath the existing assembly.

B. Adding Rings & Accessories

  • Continue ring installation, progressively adding new rings at the bottom as the structure is lifted.
  • Install ladders, manholes, nozzles, liner and other accessories during this stage, based on the tank design and layout.

C. Anchoring

  • After full assembly, anchor the tank to the foundation.
  • Use J-bolts or chemical fasteners to ensure structural stability and resistance to uplift or lateral loads.
